So here's the deal. You are going to work. For the rest of your life. Probably at a job you don't like, for a boss who doesn't really care about you, for a company that definitely doesn't care about you.

Did I mention it was for the rest of your life?

This is bleak. This is scary. It is also avoidable.

OK- I'm being a bit melodramatic. It's true that you are going to work for the rest of your life. There's a very high probability that most of you will work at a job that you do not like. The point I made about working for a boss who doesn't care about you is questionable. What is likely is that your boss won't have the skills or the time to properly develop you and your skills. Don't worry; it was never supposed to be your boss's responsibility anyway. It's yours. And working for a company that doesn't care about you? Well, that's arguable. But here's a quick lesson about working for most companies, especially the results-oriented ones. They care about the people who produce results. They don't care about the others. Period. Sounds cruel, I know, but this isn't "No Child Left Behind." And we're going to use this fact to our advantage. The first step is understanding that it all starts with PURPOSE.
